The apples on our tree are ripe, so here is the first in a series of apple recipes I will be posting. No one in my family is really fond of pie crust, so I always make a crumb topping for my apple pies.

Then while searching online, I found a recipe at Your Homebased Mom that didn’t have a traditional pie crust at all, it just used the buttery crumbs on the bottom! I wanted to try it, but among other things it called for self rising flour, which I don’t have. So I tweaked the recipe and came up with this pie.

Oh. No. We are in trouble. First of all, you don’t even have to roll out the crust. Then of course, there is the taste. Oh mercy. It is so good that I don’t think I can ever go back to making apple pie with a regular pie crust.

Every bite was wonderful. Which is bad. Because it is full of butter and sugar. We don’t really need more butter and sugar in our life.

But how can we resist? The temptation is just too great. So we decided to name this new discovery “Evil Apple Pie“. You can call it “Crumb Apple Pie”, or “Dutch Apple Pie”. Top it with some ice cream and you will be in apple pie heaven.

Seriously, doesn’t this just look amazing?

What’s the difference between apple pie and Dutch apple pie?

Dutch apple pie has a crumbly topping typically made from flour, butter, and sugar. It is sweeter than the pastry crust that tops traditional apple pie.

What are the best apples to use for baking pies?

Tart, firm apples work best for apple pies and other baked goods. I like to use Granny Smith, Jonathon, and Golden Delicious apples. Macintosh apples also work well. I actually think it’s best to combine two types of apples!

How to Make Dutch Apple Pie

Ingredients needed:

  • flour
  • sugar
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • egg yolk
  • butter
  • apples (I like Granny Smith apples)
  • cinnamon

For this apple pie, you don’t even need to roll out a crust, so it couldn’t be more simple!

  1. You make a crumb mixture out of flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, egg yolk, and melted butter.
  2. You press half of the crumbs into a deep dish 9-inch pie pan.
  3. Top with sliced apples coated with cinnamon and sugar.
  4. Then sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
  5. Now just pop the pie in the oven. So easy!

How do you know when Dutch apple pie is done?

Bake the pie till the crumbs are golden brown and the apples are tender. The filling will be thick and bubbly.

Does apple pie need to be refrigerated?

No, you do not need to store your apple pie in the refrigerator. It will last for two to three days at room temperature. Just make sure you cover it. If you want it to last a bit longer, you can store it in the fridge.

You can serve it cold or at room temperature, but we like to heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds. You don’t want to overheat it, just get it warm enough to melt the ice cream. 🙂
