Someone kicked in our basem*nt door and stole some things while we were at work. Thankfully we were out of the house, no one was hurt, and the burglar didn't make off with much. We don't own many valuables/keep money in the bank. They only took a bike, a lower end laptop, and some documents. Total stolen/damage, I think, including door, would be 3-4k. Should I file? Anyone have a sense as to how this will impact my insurance premium? We haven't filed in the over three years we've lived here.

Thanks for your responses! After writing it down, I thought it sounded pretty low. For future reference, what amount of damage do you think is worth filing a claim for? My home is only worth 300k.

I would be more worried about the laptop and documents that were stolen... Put a fraud alert on your credit profile if you have sensitive info on those.

Check CL - with luck you might find the thief there.

My son had a bike stolen, found it months later on Craigslist while searching for a new bike. Police Dept. had a fund to pay for the bike and they pursued the theft.

Depends on your emergency fund, but I wouldn't file a homeowners insurance claim for less than $5K.

And get a higher end door. With much better deadbolt system.

Op here. This is good advice. I know because we installed new doors on the front door and back door a couple of months ago. They were so drafty, but we didn't want to spring for a third right away. The burglar tried to jimmy his way through the new doors but failed. So they work great! We plan on ordering a third tomorrow.

Does anyone have any info on exactly what this would do to premiums?

25 year Insurance Agent here. There is absuluty no reason not to file a claim, claims such as this are treated like cracked windshields from debris on the highway, it's to your fault and there's nothing you could have done to prevent it. So no future increases will happen because of it.

Why the general public thinks it's wrong to file a homeowners claim is be on me, no fault claims mean no fault. Period.

What's your deductible? That's probably the key factor here. If you have a $500 deductible, you'd be crazy not to file! We've had to file 1 small claim and it didn't change our premiums at all.

Thank you, I have long suspected that conventional wisdom has really run amuck here. So, situations where things are your fault - I assume you mean human caused accidents? - are the only things that will cause your premiums to go up?
